Not far from campus, in a state park outside of Syracuse, lie two lakes 鈥� Round Lake and Green Lake 鈥� both known for their stunning green-blue tint. As meromictic lakes, they provide rich research opportunities for Hamilton students.

One might not expect Caleb Phelan 鈥�22, as a chemistry major, to spend a lot of time conducting academic research while camping in the mountains. But that鈥檚 exactly what he鈥檚 been doing this summer since part of his project is to measure and analyze the levels of two major pollutants in Adirondack water.

Luke Cohen-Abeles 鈥�23 is working as a neurodegenerative disease intern this summer at Biogen, a biotechnology company that studies neurological conditions, such as Parkinson鈥檚, and develops treatment methods.

Nathalie Martinez 鈥�23 is spending her summer working at an interdisciplinary research lab called Scientists, Technologists, and Artists Generating Exploration (STAGE) through a University of Chicago grant. Here, she describes the nature of her work and her academic background.

When she first began searching for a summer internship, Violet Newhouse 鈥�23 was not quite sure where to look. With help from her career advisor at Hamilton, she found a great opportunity.

James Argo 鈥�22 is working as a summer intern in the healthcare sector at Goldman Sachs. When starting out at Hamilton a few years ago, however, economics was not even on his radar.

Juliet Davidson 鈥�23 is spending her summer as a reporter for The Hudson Independent, a newspaper that covers the Westchester, N.Y., 鈥淩ivertowns鈥� of Irvington, Tarrytown, Sleepy Hollow, Scarborough-on-Hudson, Ardsley-on-Hudson, and Dobbs Ferry.

Along Genesee Street, just across Route 12 from Utica College, stands a stately, columned building marked by a lamppost sign that reads Oneida County History Center. It鈥檚 here where Joey Moore 鈥�22 is spending the summer working as a funded Hamilton intern, a job, he said, that demands 鈥渁 little bit of everything.鈥�

Named for Hamilton鈥檚 19th president, the Joan Hinde Stewart Career Development Program (JHS) supports and guides the career development of first-generation college students. This summer, a number of students involved in the program are exploring career interests at internships in a range of professional fields.

Sometimes, the perfect opportunity requires a bit of perseverance to obtain. This was certainly the case for Ellie Silk 鈥�22, who landed an internship at New York鈥檚 Hirschl and Adler Galleries.
