With Earth Day approaching on April 22, student organizations are coming together to increase awareness about environmental issues and celebrate our planet. Participating organizations include the Hamilton Sustainability Coordinators, Voices of Color Lecture Series, Hamilton Sunrise Movement, Shenandoah Kirkland Initiative, and La Vanguardia.

Students in this fall鈥檚 Forever Wild: Cultural and Natural Histories of the Adirondack Park explored the social, political, and environmental issues and debates within the largest state park in the U.S. and presented their thoughts and findings online. Taught by Onno Oerlemans, the Elizabeth J. McCormack Professor of Literature, the course gave students a closer look at the geologic and conservation marvel that, in a non-pandemic semester, provides recreation and adventuring opportunities to many Hamilton students.

Encouraging students鈥� curiosity about food, and fostering a recognition of humanity鈥檚 long relationship with food growing and production, motivated Jason Townsend, supervisor of introductory laboratories, to create Introduction to Science of Food. In the class, students complete hands-on projects where they grow, process, or create a food item of their choice.

Hamilton sustainability coordinators have found a way to reintroduce Food2Energy (a.k.a. suite composting) in Babbitt and Milbank residence halls despite the pandemic.

Student writer Hannah Katz 鈥�21, an Outing Club leader, describes a weekend camping trip held right in her own backyard 鈥� on campus in the Glen.

Charlotte 鈥淐harlie鈥� Gutterman 鈥�22 started her job as an arboretum intern a few weeks ago. Hannah Katz 鈥�21 sat down with her to talk about what that means and how she got involved.

Campus activities may look a bit different this semester, but students interested in exploring the nearby outdoors can still enjoy the Mohawk Valley, thanks to new bike borrowing and guided ride opportunities.
