Barbara Stein K鈥�72 is one of 10 individuals who used College Hill as a launching pad, and who are championing new ideas, challenging old conventions, pushing boundaries, and, in doing so, advancing their professions.

Government and theatre majors in hand, Niels Lesniewski 鈥�07 launched his career in political journalism just in time for the 2008 financial crisis. After he took a job at Roll Call, in Washington, D.C., the first big Senate story he covered was the crash and the Troubled Asset Relief Program that was meant to stabilize the financial system and economy.

His research project was meaningful in and of itself 鈥� investigating high salt levels in wells not far from campus. But Chris Klein 鈥�18 also gained experience in handling the unexpected, as in, 鈥淲hat else can we try to figure this out?鈥�

Lona Sniderman 鈥�19 was determined to land a summer internship at a research institution in Barcelona, and when she saw an opening to outshine the competition during a Skype interview for the job, she took it.

As a first-year student applying for a summer science research spot, Nicole DeBuono 鈥�20 told herself not to be surprised if the position went to a more senior student. But it didn鈥檛, and she got the opportunity she was after 鈥� working with Assistant Professor of Chemistry Farah Dawood on a highly interdisciplinary project in chemistry, materials science and nanoscience.

The opportunity: A 15-month paid fellowship with Hamilton鈥檚 Digital Humanities Initiative to work on a website with a renowned scholar of Confucian ritual and the cult of Confucius. Learning 3-D imaging would be part of the package.

Inspired early on by watching Neil deGrasse Tyson science shows on television, when Kalvin Nash 鈥�18 entered Hamilton, the question wasn't if he would major in science, but which science? The answer turned out to be biochemistry.

Louis Dzialo 鈥�19 secured himself a summer internship that precisely fits with his long-held love of art history and his academic and career goals 鈥� he鈥檚 working at The Frick Collection in New York City.

Jessica Williams 鈥�18, is convinced she has the greatest advisor at Hamilton. That鈥檚 Anne Feltovich, assistant professor of classics, who invited Williams to work with her at a major archaeological site 鈥� the Griffin Warrior grave in Pylos, Greece.

Sacharja Cunningham 鈥�19 found himself pondering how he could address social justice issues in the education system. From there, he took a step: He devised a summer research project, 鈥淢ind. Body. I Am Somebody.鈥�
