Course Description: | Everyone speaks with an accent. But where some people's speech is deemed "neutral," others are cast as "accented." Racialized and classed perceptions about language and fluency infuse literature as well as the realms of education, housing, employment, and immigration. How might we reframe "accent" such that it unsettles assumptions about linguistic identity and cultural worth? To what extent are accents visual, aural, and textual, not just oral? Course texts may include: My Fair Lady; Sorry to Bother You; episodes from The Simpsons and Modern Family; creative non-fiction, fiction, and poetry. |
