Course Description: | Italy is not only the country that has received the highest number of Academy Awards for the Foreign Language Film category (now Best International Feature Film), but also the birthplace of the influential movement of Neorealism, which has impacted films all over the world. Surveying different films and genres from the Silent era up to the present, this course allows students to familiarize themselves with the terminology of film making and the argumentative style of film analysis. The course also offers an invaluable opportunity to observe the changes occurring in 20th- and 21st-century Italian society, and to understand how "the seventh art" has opened multiple ways to represent, but also respond to these changes. |
