Course Description: This course examines the fraught relationship between Great Britain and Ireland from the Glorious Revolution to the era of New Labour and the Good Friday peace accord. It shows how British society was transformed by commerce and industrialization, and how the development and eventual collapse of the overseas empire influenced British politics and culture. In addressing the post-imperial era, the course places emphasis on the Cold War, the effects of the decline of Britain鈥檚 industrial economy, and immigration from the Commonwealth.
