Course Description: | The history of the novel in France is our starting point for examining the evolution of French literature, language, and society. At what point does literature and the world it represents become modern? Reading a diverse corpus of narrative fictions, from marvelous tales of love and chivalry to a more realistic portrait of nineteenth-century Paris, we challenge the binary logic suggested by this question and rethink received ideas about the novelty of the present and the alterity of the past. Introduction to key concepts in the study of the novel, such as the transition from verse and prose, narrative structure, insetting, historical fiction, and the social valences of comedy. Authors studied may include Chr茅tien de Troyes, Madame de Lafayette, Pierre Choderlos de Laclos, and Balzac. |
